A Wave to Luzerne
Rain outside my window was my wake up call this morning. It had subsided by the time we went down to breakfast, but a cold chill remained. We decided to eat in the dining room with all of the sensible people today. Fierce made sure to have his fill of bacon.
Around lunchtime, the sun was beaming and it was actually hot on my face. I tilted my head, soaked it in, and then read my Switzerland guide book. Apparently, whatever country it borders, the locals in Switzerland tend to speak that country’s language as a first language. For example in the west, they speak French, in the south they speak Italian and in the east and central areas, they speak German. Tidbits aside, we took the morning and early afternoon easy today.
A bit of convincing later, Fierce and I took the bus down to the “City”…Fierce likes the country so the “City” is almost dreaded. We went to a few watch shops before finding a Swiss chocolate shop. Fierce tried a classic truffle of milk chocolate and I had a passion fruit truffle. Yes, it is the best chocolate you will ever try…ever. We strolled through the old town, had ice cream and peaked inside Hofkirche St. Leodegar (a very beautiful church).
The last bus to Eigenthal leaves at 5:25pm. We had just enough time to see the Chapel Bridge that crosses the Reuss River from the old town to the new and only steps from the Bus and Train Station. The bridge is a window box of red flowers along the river. It is covered and inside the roof peak are several panels of paintings as you go along. Renward Cysat, Luzerne’s town clerk, wanted to tell the story of Christianity, Switzerland and how a miraculous fate guided the Swiss Confederation’s deeds. In 1611 the work was started. What an incredible legacy to leave one’s city.
