Great Nutrition Advice

Almost as soon as I told my soon to be sister-in-law, Samantha Emelander, about my breast cancer diagnosis, she offered to meet me at the Downtown Market to give me some nutrition tips. My mom took Fierce so we could chat uninterrupted…thanks Mom!

Sam came prepared. I couldn’t believe how much research she had done. Not only did she lay out a plan of the do’s and don’ts, she had articles for me to read and pictures of supplements I should buy. I appreciated the pictures because it is daunting to look at a wall of supplements in a vitamin shop.

A few of the Do’s:

  • Minimum of 7-9 hours of sleep
  • Veggies! (preferably organic)
  • Fasting 12-16 hours (basically, don’t eat right before you go to bed)

Probably my favorite “Do” is to have a green smoothie every day. This makes it super easy to get all of the supplements into my diet. My mom even gave me a set of adorable canisters so I could make a smoothie bar. I have protein powder, flax seed, chia seeds, turmeric, matcha tea, and sesame seeds, which are all supposed to be good for someone fighting breast cancer.

The Don’ts:

  • No Alcohol
  • No Sugar (this one is hard!!!!)
  • No or decreased dairy

All of these either feed cancer or cause inflammation.  Basically, I am trying to boost my immune system before I get my first round of Chemotherapy and praying that the side effects will not be so dramatic.

Sam also let me borrow a few books, one of which was a Paleo cook book called Practical Paleo: a customized approach to health and a whole-foods lifestyle. Inside, there is a whole section of recipes that help with cancer recovery. I can’t wait to try the Chinese 5-Spice Lettuce Cups!

This diet relies on eating fresh foods and I have my brother and Sam’s destination wedding coming up. I was trying to rack my brain on what I could bring to St. John so I called Sam to see what snacks are healthy, but still able to bring on a plane. She sent me this pic and it was super helpful!
